Many Americans happy with owning homes

A significant number of American homeowners are happy with their situations, according to HomeGain.

The company's 2012 National Home Ownership Satisfaction Survey found that more than 70 percent of homeowners were happy with owning their dwelling, while only 28 percent aired their unhappiness with the situation.

"Of the 28 percent of surveyed homeowners who indicated they were unsatisfied, 63 percent cited price depreciation as the primary reason." said Louis Cammarosano, general manager of HomeGain.

Of those who were satisfied with their home situation, fewer than one-quarter noted it was due to price appreciation, the survey found. The remaining group listed other reasons such as the ability to make their own home repairs.

Some of those who were not happy with their housing situation noted that the cost of ownership was too much, the survey said. This included property taxes, costs to fix the home as well as homeowner association expenses.

The residential market may have so many homeowners in a positive situation due to the current affordability of refinancing. In addition, those who may have purchased a home lately could have saved a significant amount of money due to locking in low prices.
